"For someone to take away your opportunity to be a mother, I just didn't like that."

Former Xposé presenter Nadine Reid stopped by Ireland AM on Virgin Media One this morning to share an update on her health, as well as her plans to start a family. Reid explained that she was diagnosed with fibroids after going for her cervical smear. She had been experiencing heavy periods, and was anemic as a result. When doctors discovered the size of the tumours, they advised her to get a hysterectomy, which would remove her chances of getting pregnant. "It was horrific," Nadine said this morning. "I was in bits. I thought that shouldn't be the first option. For someone to take away your opportunity to be a mother, I just didn't like that." Nadine explained that she finally found a doctor who gave her options other than a hysterectomy. https://twitter.com/IrelandAMVMTV/status/1385133751634591746 “I’m going for an open myomectomy," she said. "They’ll literally open me up and take out the fibroids that I have. There are other services, you can shrink them, and it’s less intense, but those ones can impact your fertility. Now, the other doctor didn’t tell me that. I’m 43, I don’t need anything impacting my fertility.” Nadine added that she has plans to start a family very soon and is exploring various options. “I’ve sort of said to myself, by 45 I wanted to become a parent," she said. "I haven’t given up on love, I don’t have a partner at the moment. But, me being a woman, I have certain limitations.” While a number of her friends have had babies through IVF and surrogacy, Nadine explained that she wasn't interested in that route for herself. Instead, she hopes to become pregnant through sperm donation. She said that while this route feels "crazy" to her, she loves that it's an option. Nadine stressed the importance of finding a doctor that takes your own plans seriously, especially as a woman. "I know what's best for me," she said. "And I feel like I'm in the care of a really great doctor."
