Fresh, luminous summer-ready skin – with makeup that stays put.

Sounds too good to be true? Well, I am here to tell you it is not – if you embrace the latest TikTok makeup hack – foundation in water. The hack is pretty simple – although you might be forgiven for thinking it sounds a little bizarre at first. All you need to do is dispense a few pumps of your foundation of choice into a glass of water, swirl it around with your makeup brush, and then apply the wet beads of foundation to your skin – and voila – trust me – the results will impress you. It was beauty TikTok-er Huda Kattan who first brought the hack to our attention when she posted a video response to another clip posted by @rachelrigler – who in turn had spotted it from yet another makeup artist. “This is a technique that is supposed to give you the longest wear application, that's non-transfer and it’s supposed to make your skin look more beautiful,” Huda announced. Then explained: “I do have a little more luminosity on this side [where she applied her foundation using the technique], than I do on this side [where she applied her foundation dry] – just a hint, which is nice. But we need to try the transfer test to see if this is really worth the hype.” Patting a tissue into both sides of her face she confirms “I got a little bit of transfer, just a little and I was pressing a lot. I do think this works, I just think it's a little complicated, a little gross and a little wasteful, but I will say, this is a hack that works.” @rachelrigler who posted the original video reveals the idea behind the hack: “When you put a foundation in water, it actually separates some of the oil, but it also adds a little bit of hydration,” meaning this might just be the perfect way to wear foundation during the summer, especially on days when it is particularly humid and makeup has a tendency to slip off our face.

The comments on both videos are a mixed bag, with some declaring the hack to be genius, and others again claiming they did not really notice all that much difference. TikTok-er @stxph.h are mong those impressed by the foundation in water hack saying, “It looks filtered, yet super skin-like and dewy.” @stxph.h also decided to put the long-lasting claim to the test, filming a foundation update 5 hours after applying the water foundation combo, to see if it really didn’t budge through the day. After her close examination, she concluded “the foundation is still in one piece, nothing looks cakey, nothing is separating, and it still looks like skin!”
