Pimple popping is an incredibly common behaviour among teenagers and adults, with many people succumbing to the urge when a blemish rears its head.

Although it can be unrelated, this habit often stems from anxiety, stress, or a compulsion for smooth skin, but it can lead to more severe skin issues, including scarring and infection.

Dr. Sonia Khorana, their dermatology expert, shares her insights with Her.ie on the common but harmful habit of pimple popping and why you should stop.

The Harm of Picking Spots

“Picking spots can lead to swelling and redness,” says Dr. Khorana.

“Squeezing also can lead to scabs and might leave you with permanent pits or scars. You also have an ‘open wound’ which can put you at risk of skin infections.” 

The act of picking and popping pimples can cause more damage than you might realise, potentially leading to long-term skin issues.

The Consequences 

Dr. Khorana emphasised the dangers of pimple popping, and said that it can create or even prolong scarring. 

“When you pop a spot, you end up breaking your skin barrier and you risk permanent acne scarring or pitting. 

“You also run the risk of an infection as there is an open wound and prolong how long your skin stays red, swollen, and irritated.” 

The temporary satisfaction of popping a pimple is far outweighed by the potential for it to cause lasting damage.

Safe Alternatives

While squeezing spots can be satisfying for some people, Dr. Khorana advises against it due to the risk of scarring, infection, and causing an even worse blemish. 

“It is better to let it heal in a moist environment like a hydrocolloid pimple patch,” she recommends. 

These patches provide a safer and more effective method for treating pimples without compromising skin health.

Resisting the Urge

To resist the urge to pick, Dr. Khorana recommends using a hydrocolloid pimple patch.

“Using a hydrocolloid pimple patch can act as a barrier and help you stop picking your spots. They also foster a moist environment meant to allow for faster and improved healing time.” 

These patches not only protect the skin but also promote quicker healing, reducing the temptation to interfere with blemishes.

“I think people are learning to respect the skin barrier and hopefully videos of removing spot stickers will be more of a trend,” she adds.
