New trends can take a while to break out into the mainstream, especially those that originate on Instagram.

Tiny sunglasses, bike shorts, ugly runners - all things we balked at when they first popped up that we've since come come to love. It's for this reason that we're reluctant to write off the unusual haircut that we've been seeing on Insta of late. The shag (that's actually what it's called) is a 70s and 80s classic, first popularised by the likes of Jane Fonda and Stevie Nicks. The Cut first drew our attention to the look, noting that stars like Natasha Lyonne are now bringing it back. Californian hair stylist Jane Matthews is also credited for the revival. "Almost anyone can wear bangs and layers in some way that’s loose and messy, as long as it’s balanced with their face shape, their hairline, and the shape of their body," she said. The shag trend may seem alarming because it's pretty much the opposite of the long, loose locks that lots of girls have right now. The shag is often shorter and comprises of lots of layers and crucially, a shaggy fringe. It's deliberate, definitely not effortless and ballsy as hell. Like, say you go to your hairdresser and ask for this. How do you know whether you're going to come out looking like Sarah Hyland or like Rod Stewart? It's risky business, which is why you have to respect those brave enough to go for it. We reckon those with some natural texture in their hair are best suited to the shag, though straight-haired gals could go for it if they're up for the commitment of using hot tools and/ or lots of product in their hair every day. Would we get one? Absolutely not. Well, for now at least.
