“Should I get a fringe?”

It’s the question that most of us ask ourselves at least once a every few months, usually after seeing someone on Instagram looking unreal with a fringe. We always dance around the idea but are reluctant to commit (what if it looks shocking?). That’s why we’re a little bit obsessed with one of the year’s biggest hair trends – curtain bangs. This retro-inspired look is everywhere right now, so here’s all you need to know before you book an appointment with your hairdresser.  

So what are curtain bangs?

It’s pretty much in the name - it’s a long fringe, parted in the middle like curtains. This style is super 70s-inspired and much less severe than getting a blunt fringe. Because the hair is left slightly longer than a traditional fringe, it’s also less of a commitment; just clip it back and wait for it to grow out if you’re not feeling it. Fans of Alexa Chung and Dakota Johnson will know that this look has been around for a while but it’s really blown up this year, having been co-opted by lots of our favourite fashion bloggers. We’re not surprised it’s become so popular. Curtain bangs draw focus to the cheekbones and eyes, making them super-flattering.  

Will this style suit me?

As with any new hairstyle, you should speak to your hairdresser about tailoring the look to suit your face shape and hair type. Though the classic curtain bangs are typically seen on straight or slightly wavy hair, we think they look great on curly girls too. One reason curtain bangs might not be for you? They’re not exactly low-maintenance. Like a regular fringe, they’ll require a trim every six weeks or so to keep their shape. Even though they look super chill and effortless, they’ll also require a little extra styling. To dry them, you’ll need to comb from underneath with a round brush and blow-dry from above. A volumizing spray or powder will be your new best friend for keeping them bouncy rather than just hanging on your face.

If you’re in two minds and have long hair, part it in the centre of your head and ask your hairdresser for layers at the front. This will give you an idea of what more definition around the face would look like.
